Lihui Liang (b. 1994, China), lives and works in London. 'Counterreality' is a spiritual world envisioned by the artist through the process of active imagination, engaging in dialogue with both the real world and the spiritual realm. In this Counterreality, Liang has created a world with strange creatures, divine animals, and enhanced humans, all existing beyond the constraints of ordinary life to lead the audience to explore their true and potential selves out of societal limitations. Her unique skills lie in creating spiritually imbued portraits, often accompanied by animal spirits, reflecting as a means to challenge core values and illuminate the character's also the audience's greater selves. In addition to her expertise in oil painting, Liang actively explores in films, books, and music as compositions to her artistic practice.
Liang graduated from the University of the Arts London with an MA Illustration and Visual Media in 2021, BFA at California College of the Arts in 2017. Selected exhibitions include Dreamscapes, Hypha Studios, London, UK (2024); Aphorism, The Holy Art, London, UK (2023); Phenomenal Female, Bookery Galleries, London, UK (2023); The Red Victorian, San Francisco, USA (2018); Artsaveslives Gallery, San Francisco, USA (2017). Her short film 'Animal Religion' has been officially selected at the London Short Film Festival 2024, and 'The Cat Chronicles' at the Los Angeles Movie & Music Award 2024.
